Wonderin' Wool - Systemic Design

People needs to put together the visible and the invisible, so they can elaborates fairy tales, myths, legends, parties, songs, art”.
- Maria Lai
Wonderin' Wool is a systemic project that revolves around the Metropolitan Area of Turin and the company Dual Sanitaly, localized in the industrial area of Moncalieri that operates in the health and well-being sector, especially with textile medical devices.

In a systemic design approach, the main tool of diagnosis is a well-structured data collection (defines as holistic diagnosis) that goes from macro to micro. The ultimate goal is to have a solid base from which to identify challenges and opportunities in the territory and to understand which elements are fundamental to create a systemic pattern of people, projects and stories.
A series of topics were considered to guide the collection of quantitative and qualitative data: environmental, cultural, economical, and social aspects were the main directions for the analysis of the territory, with a specific focus on textile. Instead, for the company, history, production processes – with particular attention to the inputs and outputs – financial aspects and relationships with other stakeholders were the main focus of the analysis.
All the data were then organized and translated into visual representations inside a gigamap
crucial to understand the emerging priorities and the interconnection already existing.
The combination of data collection, data clustering and data analysis, brought several considerations that, combined with the general overview of the defined territory, led to specific challenges as well as possible future opportunities.
After these considerations the systemic project has been defined in all its details as an “integrated project management” with two main goals: the reuse of textile waste and the communication’s implementation. From them, positive outcomes from an economical and environmental point of view have been highlighted. In different scales of territorial expansion and time frames, those outcomes include the final consideration of this project and merge all the different transdisciplinary approaches involved into one unified conclusion.
The project was presented as a case study during the
RSD10 Symposium — Relating Systems Thinking and Design
